Employee leave benefits, including the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), play a vital role in ensuring that workers can maintain a healthy work-life balance while addressing personal and family-related needs.
Leave and Absences
A healthy work life balance is key to our work environment. South Texas College offers a variety of employee leave types.
Sick Leave
Each full-time employee shall earn 8 hours of paid sick leave per month to use towards themselves or their immediate family.
Vacation Leave
Each full time, 12th month employee shall earn paid vacation leave according to years of service.
- Less than 5 years – 8 Hours/ Month.
- At least 5 years but less than 10 – 10 Hours/ Month.
- At least 10 years but less than 15 – 12 Hours / Month.
- At least 15 years but less than 20 – 14 hours / Month.
- At least 20+ years – 16 Hours / Month.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) mandates that covered employers provide eligible employees with up to 12 weeks/ 480 hours of unpaid job-protected leave due to family and medical reasons during any twelve-month period. The leave can be taken continuously or intermittently.
Upon completion of the FMLA leave, employees must be reinstated to their original position or a comparable one with equal pay and benefits.
Eligibility:
- Employee must have been employed for at least 12 months.
- Must have worked a minimum of 1250 hours in the year prior to the request.
- Eligible employees may apply for FMLA leave if they are absent or anticipate an absence from work for more than three days due to the birth or placement of a child, illness, or injury of a qualified family member or their own.
How to get started:
- Contact the Office of Human Resources to confirm eligibility.
- Once notice of eligibility is received, you are required to complete the FMLA request form.
- Your attending physician will complete the FMLA medical certification.
